Link Generator Tool Makes Anything on eBay Trackable

Did you know that Link Generator is probably the most versatile and user-friendly tool available out of all of ePN’s offerings? In addition to creating Text Links, it allows you to quickly pick up affiliate code to make anything trackable on your site (content, images, video), to any landing page on eBay.  We frequently get questions from ePN Partners on how to use this tool in order to create trackable links, so we wanted to go over this in a bit more detail.

One thing that is not specifically called out when using the Link Generator tool is that the “Link Text” field is optional. If you are not interested in creating a Text Link and simply want to pick up code to essentially ‘hyperlink’ a term or an image already on your site that tracks activity back to your affiliate account, you can leave this field blank.

Let’s take a look at creating tracking code when leaving the Link Text field blank. The screenshot below provides an example of what fields to complete (and not complete) for the eBay US Program with the Custom URL option. NOTE: The process is the same for programs in other countries.  After inputting your desired destination URL in the Custom URL field, selecting your Campaign, and making sure to leave the Link Text field empty, click the “Generate Link” button, and your tracking code is generated under “Get Your Link.” You have the option between Javascript and HTML for the Code Type.  Select the HTML option and copy the code within the Code box.

To make an image already hosted on your site link to eBay and have the clicks track to your affiliate account, you simply ‘embed’ the image with the HTML affiliate tracking code you copied. You can also embed content or video on your site with HTML affiliate tracking code to create ‘trackable’ links.

Time Saving Tip

If you want to embed your HTML tracking code into your site in several locations but to different eBay landing pages, use your ‘base’ tracking code over and over again so that you don’t have to log into your account every time to pick up new code. The Custom URL option makes this especially easy. If you use this option for your base code, you just need to change the destination URL within your code (after mpre=) so that traffic is directed to a different location. You can also change the Campaign ID in the code if necessary.

However, to ensure the format of your destination URL includes ASCII characters (URLs can only be sent over the Internet using ASCII characters), you can use this handy coding tool for your eBay destination URL. Simply paste the URL into the box and select ‘encode’. You then copy the encoded destination URL and paste it after mpre= in your eBay tracking code. Test the encoder tool with http://ebay.com and see how it includes the ASCII characters for you.

Example HTML tracking code with http://ebay.com as destination URL:

<a target="_self" href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=&toolid=10001&campid=XXXXXXXXXX&customid=&mpre=%20http%3A%2F%2Febay.com">http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=&toolid=10001&campid=XXXXXXXXXX&customid=&mpre=%20http%3A%2F%2Febay.com</a><img style="text-decoration:none;border:0;padding:0;margin:0;" src="http://rover.ebay.com/roverimp/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=&toolid=10001&campid=XXXXXXXXXX&customid=&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]">
