Back to School

Back to School Basics

In just a few short weeks, students will be loading up their backpacks and heading off to school. You can help parents prepare by highlighting learning and living essentials for students of all ages, from crayons for kindergarteners to computers for college kids. Sales of back-to-school items have begun to climb and peak during the first half of August, so now is the perfect time to focus on back-to-school season.

Old School Essentials

Rather than fighting the crowds at busy big box stores, it’s nice to be able to get all the classroom basics for a great price in one online location. eBay has note-taking necessities like notebooks, pens, pencils and paper, along with paint, brushes, markers and construction paper for budding Picassos. Band and orchestra instruments and supplies can also be found on eBay (along with earplugs, if needed).

New School Necessities

With increasingly wired-in classrooms, school gadget needs now go beyond a simple calculator. Laptops or tablets are often now required for university students, and a dorm-sized television or video game console are nice to help unwind after exams. A digital recorder comes in handy when trying to remember lectures, and an external hard drive or flash drive can provide life-saving backup for lengthy term papers.

Fashion Forward

For something to lug around all those books and gear, students can find a range of backpacks and messenger bags from makers such as Jansport and The North Face. Help students put their best foot forward as they walk into the classroom with boots from UGG and sneakers from Nike. Find denim, the number one student apparel essential, from Levi’s and Hollister to True Religion and Seven for All Mankind.

Be sure to check out eBay’s 2012 Back-To-School Hotlist to gain insight into even more top sellers and other resources. Parents and students are already thinking about heading back to school, so move to the head of the class by getting these items in front of buyers.

Celebrate Back-to-School with a Chance to Earn More!

While we may be awash in sunny days at the beach and backyard BBQs with family and friends, it won’t be long before summer bids us farewell and the school bells start ringing. Here at eBay Partner Network we’re getting prepped and ready with our Back-to-School bonus promotion for Fashion and Electronics. During the month of August you’ll have the opportunity to earn extra cash for driving incremental revenue in these two categories.

Here’s how it works:

  • This promotion is open to both new and existing publishers on QCP in the U.S. Program.
  • Publishers will earn a bonus on Winning Bid Revenue growth in the month of August 2012.  June 2012 performance will serve as the baseline for the month-long promotion.  (Winning Bid Revenue is what eBay collects in seller fees on transactions.)
  • The bonus calculation will be 50% of the total Winning Bid Revenue growth in each of the two categories for August 2012 compared to June 2012.
  • The bonus applies to Winning Bid Revenue growth in both of the following categories (and subcategories):

Electronics – Consumer Electronics(293), Computers/Tablets & Networking(58058), Cell Phones & Accessories(15032), Cameras & Photo(625)

Fashion - Clothing, Shoes & Accessories(11450), Health and Beauty(26395), Jewelry and Watches(281)

Here’s an example:

In June, Publisher A drives $10,000 of Winning Bid Revenue in the Electronics category and $1,000 in Fashion.  Then, in August, Publisher A drives $20,000 of Electronics Winning Bid Revenue and $2,000 in Fashion, representing $11,000 in total growth.  Publisher A would then earn 2 bonus payments: $5,000 for Electronics and $500 for Fashion.

June WBidRev August WBidRev Aug WBidRev Growth Bonus Multiplier Bonus
Electronics $10,000 $20,000 $10,000 50% $5,000
Fashion $1,000 $2,000 $1,000 50% $500
Total $11,000 $22,000 $11,000 50% $5,500

Hint: check your Category Activity Winning Bid Revenue by selecting the Reports Tab, then Category Reports Type.

This is an exciting opportunity to really boost your earnings in August! If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below and we’ll do our best to get you an answer.

Chatting with eBay Partner Network: Vikram Singh Gets Us Up to Speed on Half.com

This week Ivka Adam is sitting down with Vikram Singh, General Manager of Half.com, to talk about why now is a great time for publishers to be working with Half.com. Vikram has been at eBay for six and a half years with a stint at corporate before moving over to PayPal. Recently, he was offered the General Manager position at Half.com and found the opportunity too exciting to pass up. According to Vikram, Half.com caters heavily to people 18-24 years of age - mainly students that are interested in getting textbooks at the lowest prices. He says that Back to School season makes up the bulk of Half’s business.

As you may have seen here on our blog, Half.com have released some pretty aggressive coupons with savings from 12-15%. Additionally, they’ve recently rolled out their rentals program for those shoppers that don’t want to pay a heftier purchase price for textbooks. Keep in mind that publishers can use both the coupon and rental initiatives to earn revenue through the affiliate program. Finally, Vikram talks about the new Half.com API. He says it makes it much easier for affiliates to search for products on Half.com.

Half.com Launches Renting and Limited Edition Coupons

You may have read about our Half.com coupon promotion a couple of weeks ago on the blog. This week, we’re upping the ante and offering even bigger deals to Half.com customers:

14% off anything on Half.com.  Minimum Order of $50.  Maximum discount of $40.  This is a limited time coupon available while supplies last.

To redeem, simply enter BTSAF14 at checkout.

This coupon has a very limited run. It starts today (August 1st) and expires on August 7th.

We’re also excited to announce the launch of the Half.com Renting Service! It went live Friday, July 15 and the results have been amazing.  In our pre-launch tests and in the second half of July, we’ve noticed a significant increase in average order value for renting. So, not only are we paying for a new action, but rental actions could yield even higher payouts to publishers. This adds yet another reason to promote Half.com during peak Back to School season. Visit the Book Rental Landing Page and the Renting FAQs for more information.

Move-In Must-Haves

College kids and their parents need to find the items to make a new school-year home seem a little more comfortable. Parents will soon start to think about getting their students back to school, so get a jump on these popular back-to-school basics to move yourself to the head of the class. You can find a variety of banners, including the 728x90 banner shown above, as well as 300x250, 160x600 and 120x600 by logging into the Publisher Portal and searching for “Back to School.” Happy promoting!

What is the new incentive enhancement on the affiliate buying flows?

Why is this helpful to buyers?

This will eliminate cut-n-pasting of incentive codes across websites and help convert buyers quickly.

Can you provide me with the example URL?

We have enhanced the addItem cart command to include incentives (along with items):-

http://cart.half.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ShoppingCart&action=additem&itemid=90000983664&pr=2221182&incentive=GCxxxxxxxx

When will this feature go live?

It went live in June and is ready to go!

2. HalfFinding Service

What are the benefits of the new HalfFinding service?

The findHalfProducts service currently returns only 5 items per item condition.  Given a specific product identifier (like ISBN), the new HalfFindingService will enable buyers to quickly browse through item inventory (up to 1,500 items) in a paginated manner.  The service will also provide the ability to filter items by condition, seller, price range and shipping service.

When can I start using this new service?

The service is now live.  Seller, Price Range & Shipping filters launched at the end of June.
