Update on the Daily Deals Feed

A few weeks back we did an episode of ePN TV highlighting the new Daily Deals feed. What we overlooked in that piece was the limitation of not being able to add a campaign ID to the feed. For obvious reasons this meant the new functionality, while impressive, was of little use to ePN Publishers.

As a result, one of our product managers took some time to find an interim solution and we’re excited to share it with you. It involves the use of a third-party tool and it should be approached with a “beta” mindset. That said, if you consider yourself to be the bleeding edge, adventurous type then we hope you’ll give it a try:

  1. Click on this link to Yahoo! Pipes: http://pipes.yahoo.com/epn_feeds/daily_deals
  2. Enter the appropriate publisher ID and campaign ID
  3. Enter your categories separated by commas (Visit the eBay Category Directory for a list of codes)
  4. Click “Run Pipe” and you’re done.

Again, we apologize for the confusion around the original Daily Deals video. This was an obvious oversight on our part and we hope you’ll give this workaround a try. We are working on a more permanent internal solution, but this is a great alternative for the foreseeable future. If you have questions, please feel to leave them below and we’ll do our best to answer them.

ePN TV: Daily Deals RSS Feed – Now Customizable!

UPDATE 8/2/12: Over the last few days several of you have raised questions about how to add Campaign IDs to the Daily Deals RSS feed shown in the video above. There is currently no way today to do this. We are working with the Daily Deals Team to find a solution going forward and will report back as soon as we have more information.

Featuring Daily Deals on your site just got a lot easier! On this episode of ePN TV, Saquib Pasha sits down with Kelly Chrisman of the Daily Deals Team to talk about what’s new in their world. Kelly was excited to introduce a new categorization tool that allows publishers to customize the Daily Deals RSS feed to include only the categories pertinent to their site and customers.

Kelly demonstrated how to sort items by category in a few quick steps.

NOTE: The video incorrectly shows Kelly separating categories using a "&." Instead, you should use a "," to add multiple categories.

1. Visit the eBay Category Directory to identify the category codes of the items you’d like to feature.

2. Take note of the codes of the items you want to feature. In the video Kelly used:

Electronics: 293

Men’s Accessories: 4250

3. Then enter these onto the end of this url, http://www.ebay.com/electronics/feed?siteId=0&cids=

Add additional categories with “,”

To sort only by Electronics, enter

http://www.ebay.com/electronics/feed?siteId=0&cids=293

To sort by Electronics AND Men’s Accessories, enter

http://www.ebay.com/electronics/feed?siteId=0&cids=293,4250

Hit enter, and your customized feed is generated. Pretty awesome, right?

As always, we want to hear from you – what other features would you like to see added? What other feedback do you have for the Daily Deals Team? Feel free to leave your comments below.

ePN TV: Carrie Smith Walks Through the Daily Deals Holiday Calendar

One of my favorite things about ePN TV is that we get to interview different folks at eBay to get a sense of what they’re working on in their little corner of the eBay Universe. Not only is it fun to look beyond the walls of ePN, but it also provides a behind the scenes glimpse for publishers to better understand the many facets of the larger eBay organization. Pretty cool, right?

This week, Julia Barrett, ePN’s Head of North America is chatting with Carrie Smith, the Daily Deals Ninja! Carrie was kind enough to update us on some of the fun deals being rolled out this Holiday season.

To commemorate a milestone – the 3rd birthday of the Daily Deals Program - the team released the Xbox Gold Card at an astonishingly low price. If you’re a gamer, you know you can’t find this price anywhere.

Carrie also let us know about some other exciting events on the calendar through the end of the year:

  • eBay Daily Deals Daily Sweepstakes:  11/1–12/16 - Prizes include an iPad, xbox 360 bundle, Nikon COOLPIX S9100, Nintendo 3DS and $500 gift cards. Users must enter daily for a chance to win.
  • Guaranteed Arrival: 12/15–12/19 - Certain sellers will guarantee arrival by the holidays if products are purchased within a certain time frame.
  • 25 Days of Deals: The Deals Team will be promoting two deals per day!
  • Black Friday Week: 11/21-11/23 – Two deals per day throughout the week
  • Pre-Cyber Monday Week: 11/26-11/27 – Two deals per day throughout the week
  • Black Friday: 11/25 – Five deals throughout the day
  • Cyber Monday: 11/28 – Five deals throughout the day
  • Cyber Monday Week: – Two deals per day throughout the week

As you can see, there’s a lot going on through the rest of the Holiday shopping season. As a publisher this would be a great time to road-test Daily Deals on your site. You can grab creative within the Publisher Portal.

Chatting with eBay Partner Network: The Scoop on Daily Deals

dailydeal logo In March, Ivka Adam sat down at eBay HQ to talk to Aimee Richardson, Daily Deals Inventory Specialist, about some of the inner workings of the Daily Deals program. This week we’re excited to bring you that interview.

Daily Deals has been around for about two years and feature practical and premium products at the lowest prices available online. Today the program offers four primary deals and the ability to scroll by category. The deals are sourced from a pool of sellers that have been vetted and come highly recommended to the Daily Deals team.

Daily Deals at eBay take on several different formats. Our A.M. Primaries refresh in the morning at 8: 00 AM Pacific Time. As those deals slow down, or inventory starts to run out, P.M. Primaries are then circulated into the product mix. This ensures the continuous flow of inventory and a great deal all day long for our customers.

Our next offering, Deals by Category, sit below the fold and feature up to 12 scrolling categories and up to 10 products per category - that’s up to 120 deals available at any given time!

Finally, we have our Email Deals. This push goes out to our 450,000 subscribers every morning and features our top four primary deals as well as an email exclusive. While subscribers get first crack at these early morning specials, they are usually rotated onto the page later for the rest of eBay’s shoppers.

You may be wondering how a buyer can be certain that the Daily Deals really are offering you the best price available on the web. Well, don’t fret - Aimee’s team compares each offering to prices at Amazon, Google Shopping and eBay’s own inventory. In fact, many deals are 15% - 20% below the lowest price online.

As a publisher at eBay Partner Network, you’ve had a tremendous impact on the success of Daily Deals. In fact, Aimee says that our affiliates were responsible for driving almost 50% of the total traffic to the recent Barnes & Noble NOOK Color promotion. Nicely done.

Keep in mind that Daily Deals are currently only offered in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany.

We hope you enjoy this look behind the curtain of the Daily Deals program. Feel free to post your thoughts and questions below.
