The API allows publishers with deeper programming knowledge to fully customize the user experience, while considerably enhancing your chances to boost your performance. Here are a few things you’ll need to know:

What can I do with the API?

The API is the most open and powerful tool for tailoring eBay listings to work harmoniously with your site. There is also functionality to integrate ePN reports within your own backend systems for a more streamlined way to monitor your performance.

Customizing eBay listings

You can use the API to personalize eBay’s listings according to filters, thus maximizing your performance potential. There are multiple types of calls and filters available for you to experiment with to find the mix that works best for your visitors.

For example, a comparison website might use the API to display eBay products that are sold by top rated sellers, above a certain amount, and with free shipping, which could help drastically improve conversion rates.

How do I access the API?

First, apply to join the Developers Program here. After you have been accepted, go to “My Account” and click on “Generate Productions Keys” to get an Application ID.

Then, begin by picking a call, checking out the sample code and testing using your Application ID.

From there, you can build your app, test it and have it approved by the eBay Developer Program to start making up to 5,000 requests per IP per day. For more details, check out the Checklist for Going Live.

What are the different APIs available? How can I filter my listings?

Though we have a number of APIs, the most popular ones are the Finding API and the Shopping API.

The Finding API enables you to search for items using eBay's Finding Platform. This API allows advanced search capabilities for eBay items, while providing useful metadata to refine searches and enhance the search experience.

Helping the Community During the Holidays

ePN_Harvest_1 This week members of the eBay Partner Network Team gathered at Northwest Harvest in Seattle to pack food for those in need throughout Washington. In total, the eBay team helped pack 8,550 lbs of oatmeal, which will feed roughly 6,584 local families.


Northwest Harvest is the only non-profit food bank distributor operating statewide in Washington with a network of more than 360 food banks. They provide more than 1.7 million meals every month and 26 million pounds each year to this vast network of emergency food providers.

With distribution centers throughout Washington, Northwest Harvest reaches rural communities where people in need have limited access to adequate and nutritious food.

The Value of Real World Networking for Publishers

The Internet is an incredibly powerful place for commerce and relationships, but there are some offline experiences that cannot be effectively replicated, such as face-to-face networking.

Sure, we can sort of interact face to face with video chat, and plenty of conversations take place by email, instant message, social networks, and the like, but there is a big difference when you are actually present with somebody.

Here are three techniques to help you make the most of your in-person networking opportunities.

  • Be prepared: When you attend an offline event, there are so many potential relationships and opportunities to take advantage of, but it’s key to schedule meetings in advance. Schedules get tight at conferences and other events, so do some homework to find out who will be there and get on their calendars as early as you can. Also, in the weeks or months leading up to these meetings, you should ensure that you have all the marketing materials, business cards, and other support documents you may need. If you need more, get that order in well in advance to avoid expedited shipping fees.
  • Plan efficient meetings: In speaking with countless conference attendees over the years, I’ve found that in-person meetings typically run anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. So, you’ve got a tight timeline to accomplish your goals. Have your elevator pitch rehearsed (30 seconds that summarize what you do and what you can do for them), as well as questions you want to ask and answers for things you expect to be asked. Be sure to have a hard stop and honor it, because you’ll both have other people to meet.
  • Follow up: After you’ve had a meeting, make a point to follow up within 24 hours with an email that summarizes the points that we covered. Ask for a follow-up phone call, if needed, to work out the plans you’ve made. Also, get some thank you cards and write a short note to drop in snail mail – that final, personal connection makes a big impact.

Meeting and networking online can be quality building blocks for publishers, but taking it offline will enhance and progress that relationship.

Extending Your Reach and Effectiveness with Social Media


Social media has become an unavoidable and hugely important part of people’s everyday lives, with sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram becoming woven into the very fabric of society.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of social optimization, we thought it might be good to put the size of this opportunity into context:

Don’t sell to your fans/followers: While this may seem like strange advice, one of the main concerns for publishers dipping their toes into the social ocean is that traditionally their social pages have not been used to sell products. You don’t want to upset your audience by throwing multiple deals at them.

That said, the key to jumpstarting your social presence is to show relevant or unusual content that will engage your fans/followers and get them sharing and talking. Running a page dedicated to guitars? Use eBay to show something unique like this Rare 1920 Pre-War Martin Acoustic Guitar. With a Buy It Now price tag of a staggering $38,999, it may be unlikely that you’d get the sale, but it will get people talking, sharing and clicking through to eBay, and coming back to you for more unique content.

Make those images work: Pinterest is one of the highest climbing stars in the social media world, with 25 percent of Fortune Global 100 companies having Pinterest accounts. Use Pinterest to engage users with compelling images that link through to eBay. If you choose wisely, your followers will do your job of sharing it to the rest of their network and the online community.

You can find everything on eBay: Niche verticals and products work really well in social media. By setting up pages that make the most of some of the less mainstream verticals on eBay, you can build a solid and loyal following of users who will comment, share and actively discuss your content.

Campaigns, Campaigns, Campaigns: It is vitally important that you create a new campaign for each social presence on which you include eBay. Using Mobile Trends to Optimize Your Sites


Mobile phones are everywhere, now a fully integrated part of most people’s lives. In fact, 4.2 billion people use mobile devices to access social media content. The mobile industry is constantly evolving and with smartphone penetration at an all-time high, now is definitely the time to think about how you can increase your mobile traffic in a significant way.

We’ve seen our publishers make great strides in the area of mobile optimization, and have a few insights that we hope will prove helpful.

  • Deploy Responsive Design: We can all relate to attempting to browse a website on our phone, only to discover that it is impossible to navigate because there isn’t a mobile version. As we know, desktop versions display poorly on a mobile device. Responsive design is here to banish those memories and make your site look great on any screen size. While this can be a big undertaking, it is definitely an initiative to consider with more people surfing the web on phones and tablets.
  • Use the Transaction Download Report: The Transaction Download Report has taken on a new level of importance for our publishers with the introduction of new pricing. You can filter this report to show your level of mobile traffic, while discovering which campaigns drive the most mobile revenue and/or new users.
  • Keep it Snappy: When thinking about upgrading your site, take time to think through how it will look on a mobile device. Long, scrolling content is difficult to read and interact with on a mobile device, so it’s generally better to keep content short and highly relevant. Make sure your eBay integrations are easily accessible to mobile users, and make them clear and concise so people know where they are clicking.
  • Shop with Confidence: While mobile shopping is growing in popularity, security and trust issues are still something to consider. By using confidence pages to let your users know that eBay is a safe and secure place to shop, they’ll feel more comfortable taking that step on both the desktop and on mobile devices.

Increase Your Earnings in the U.S. and Canada with our Holiday Promotion


Even though temperatures are getting cooler outside, deals and events at eBay are beginning to heat up for the Holiday retail season. We are happy to announce that we will be hosting a Holiday bonus promotion for the eBay US and eBay CA programs this year.

Starting November 20th you can earn a 20% bonus of eligible Winning Bid Revenue (WBR) by driving additional sales during Nov 20th - Dec 31st compared to the period of Oct 9th - Nov 19th.

Holiday Bonus Promotion Qualifications:

  • Eligibility:  Increase your WBR* by 25% between the period of Oct 9th – Nov 19th  (Timeframe 1) and the period of Nov 20th – December 31st  (Timeframe 2)  to be eligible for the bonus
  • Bonus: Receive 20% of additional WBR you drive during Timeframe 2
  • All items in eBay US and eBay CA programs are eligible

* You can find your WBR in the Transaction Download Report under the “Amount” column

Example 1: Eligible Partner  


Timeframe 1: October 9th 2013 – November 19th 2013

Timeframe 2: November 20st – December 31st 2013

In the example above, the partner drove $2,000 in WBR in Timeframe 1 and $6,000 in WBR in Timeframe 2. To qualify for the bonus, the partner had to increase Timeframe 1 WBR by 25%, making their Qualifying WBR Threshold $2,500. WBR generated that exceeds $2,500 during Timeframe 2 is considered eligible WBR. A 20% bonus is calculated on eligible WBR, meaning the partner will be receiving an additional $700 bonus payout.

Example 2: Ineligible Partner


In this example, the Partner only drove $2,300 in WBR in Timeframe 2. Because WBR in Timeframe 2 did not exceed the 25% increase over Timeframe 1, this partner does not qualify for a bonus.
